It’s OK!

We’re in to week 3 of the 2020 Crossfit Open workouts. We have had some amazing scores roll in for the first annual “306 Class Open Championships”. I know I speak for more than just myself when I say that as a coach, it has been a thrill to watch people push and grind for every rep they can muster up. That kind of effort and grit is contagious in the community. Some of you have set new PRs and left the gym on a high. However, some of you have left the gym a little disappointed or frustrated.

Last week 20.2 threw double unders at us; to an end that some people’s skipping rope mysteriously forgot how to spin. The frustration is maddening when something we usually have no problem doing decides to disappear from our repertoire of skills. This week we have our first real “high level skills” with the handstand push-up and/or handstand walking. These high level skills can also be discouraging when they simply just aren’t quite there yet.  Here’s the thing - in either case, it’s ok!

While it’s fun to talk some smack to the other classes and maybe hassle your friends or fri-enemies a little bit, at the end of the day, no one really remembers what happened at the end of the five weeks that the Open occupies. We simply go back to getting our fitness in to live healthy and happy lives. I get it; I think almost all of us who come in to the gym have a competitive nature to one degree or another. That is one thing that helps bond the community together. It’s only natural then also that we get frustrated or discouraged when we dont perform as well as we think we should. Or even as well as we know we can.

Fact of the matter, you are far more capable and far more fit than you think you are. Regardless of your results that are wrote on the whiteboard everyday (and subsequently erased and forgotten about every night), whether you do a workout scaled or Rx, you are in the gym putting in work. You are in that small percentage of the population that has prioritized their health and are working on a healthier version of yourself.

When you leave the gym each day, hold your head up!  You have just spent an hour of your time moving your needle over to the “fit” side of the spectrum. As much as you want “a few more reps” or that next fancy skill or that new PR, its OK when they don’t happen. Another fact of the matter, keep putting in the work and they will come!  You’ll achieve those goals. You will look back and laugh at how fit you thought you were.

As the Open goes on, there are going to be skills come up that you may not be able to do. You may scale a workout because a barbell is too heavy. You might post a score that you aren’t happy about. It’s all ok. I guarantee you that the fact you have come in and put in some work will make you better. And better. And better. Wash, rinse, repeat. Hold your head up! You’ve got this.
