SAD tip #4
Avoid drugs and alcohol. This is kind of tough when these companies market the crap out of it. We are made to believe that no occasion or fun times can be had without the use of drugs or alcohol. Have you ever noticed the amount of alcohol that characters consume on TV or in movies. It is seriously shocking. Plus, they seem to be able to drink these copious amounts and not be hungover...how does that even work?
We have normalized and sensationalized alcohol and drug consumption. You are somehow a "party pooper" or "no fun" if you don't participate. But here is a big truth - if you are sad or depressed, the LAST thing that you need to do is drink or take mind altering drugs. Sure that will make things feel numb in the moment, but that is NOT what you need. You need to be aware, feel your feelings and implement healthy behaviors to deal or cope with them. Be present in your life - all of it.
We are not meant to be gleaming with joy 24/7. There was a cartoon movie that portrayed this beautifully. It was called "Inside Out". In that movie, everyone thought that sadness was to blame for everything, but it the end, they learned that joy could not exist without sadness. It's okay and completely normal to have a variety of emotions. Feel them, understand them and please don't numb them.
