The fitness continuum

This past weekend, we were able to host a CF-L1 certification course at the gym. I think it is a great course filled with tons of information that everyone can benefit from. I also like "going back to the basics" and appreciate health and fitness in the simplest form.

Now, if you have trained with us for a while, you have probably seen this graph sketched on the white board at some time. If you haven't, here it is. This is the health continuum that is presented by CrossFit. This, in a nutshell is a beautiful description as to why you should train and focus on good nutrition. The fitter you are, the more health you have "banked" for when you get hit with a health crisis.

Think about that for a second. If you are at the fitness end of the spectrum and you get a virus or break and arm (or anything else that can set your health back), you will undoubtedly have your health suffer, but it will only push you a little closer to wellness. Once you recover, you can work your way back up to a state of fitness.

Now, take another person - they smoke socially, enjoy cocktails a couple days a week, have a dose of marihuana before bed to help them sleep, don't focus on nutrition and only get active a couple times per week, but not enough to break a sweat. Chances are, this individual is a lot closer to sickness on this continuum. They probably feel fine and have no big issues until, they get that same virus. They don't have a lot of "banked" health and not only could this virus set them way back, it could kill them.

The beautiful thing is that it is never too late to get started. You can make small changes everyday and work your way towards fitness. Do you need a little help with your journey or getting on the right path? Give us a call and come in for a class. We have a team of world class coaches who are eager to help you reach your potential. Think of it like putting away money for your future, you are just banking some health.
